Mathematics

Our main goal is to inspire, educate and empower learners in the field of Mathematics. It should be an enjoyable and worthwhile subject for all students regardless of their perceived level of mathematical proficiency.

We support all students to reach their highest level of potential in numeracy. We encourage the development of mathematical thinking, both in school and out, to help students become resilient and resourceful problem-solvers.

At Fairley House we follow the National Curriculum. Mathematics lessons are taught daily in small, ability-based groups by specialist teachers. Teaching is tailored to the needs of the individual student. Those who require more support will get more support and the stronger mathematicians will have the opportunity to be stretched.

Our lessons are planned and taught using transdisciplinary teaching, which includes direct or indirect support from Occupational Therapists and Speech and Language Therapists. Teachers plan lessons that allow children to build up their learning in small steps, with multiple opportunities for recapping knowledge already covered.

Lessons are delivered using multisensory methods and many visual, technological and practical supports make the teaching of mathematics more dynamic and the learning more enjoyable and far easier to commit to memory.

A multisensory approach includes motor maths in the gym and uses OT and PE equipment to give maths concepts a physicality. Children use bodies while learning a maths concept which helps with understanding and recall.
