Citizenship Studies
Citizenship Studies is a popular subject which seeks to enable young people to become thoughtful, active citizens, steeped in an understanding of what contributes to a harmonious society.
Students gain a deeper knowledge of public institutions that are designed to preserve democracy, government and the rule of law. Over the course of their studies students will develop skills to create sustained and reasoned arguments, and appreciate different perspectives and viewpoints on political and social issues.

Citizenship Studies builds essential skills valued by higher education and employers such as bias recognition, critical evaluation of arguments, considering evidence and searching for alternative interpretations and reliable sources of information.
The GCSE qualification is a linear three-year course, with students beginning in year 9 and sitting their exams at the end of year 11. It is taught over three hours of lessons per week, covering the following content:
- Citizenship skills, processes and methods
- Life in modern Britain
- Rights and responsibilities
- Politics and participation
- Active citizenship
These lessons are supplemented by after-school tutorials, and SLT support is available where necessary.
